Ha Tinh serves as a bridge linking the North and the South of Vietnam and an important transport hub on the East-West corridor with important routes running through the province, Highway 1A, railways, the Ho Chi Minh Road, sea routes (North-South transport axis), Road 8 and Highway 12 (East-West corridor axis).
Ha Tinh has a population of 1,289,600 people including 678,244 people in the working age, accounting for 52.59% of the population. The metropolitan areas account for 11.05% and the rural areas account for 88.95%.
Apart from 357 reservoirs with a total capacity of more than 700 million m3, the Province is building Xuan Hoa reservoir with a capacity of 15.8 million m3, a reservoir on the Tri River’s upstream with a capacity of 25.4 million m3, the multi-purpose irrigation project of Ngan Truoi-Cam Trang with a capacity of nearly 800 million m3.
Ha Tinh is located in northern central Vietnam, at 17054’-18038’ latitude north and 105011’-106036’ longitude east. It borders Nghe An Province to the north, Quang Binh Province to the south, Laos to the west (145km) and the East Sea to the east (137km).
Archaeological studies in Nghi Xuan, Thach Duc and Duc Tho and cultural, historical and language information shows that tens of thousands of years ago, prehistoric people came to settle in this area which might have been the great centre of the pre-Dong Son Civilization.
